я╗┐For centuries, menstruation has
been wrapped in silence, shame, and stigma. Across homes, schools, and public
discourse, periods were something girls were taught to whisper about, to hide,
and often to feel embarrassed by. But today, a new wave of young women is
changing that тАФ boldly, publicly, and unapologetically.
Welcome to the era of period positivity.
Breaking the Silence, One Voice at a Time
Gone are the days when young women
were expected to hide sanitary pads in brown paper bags or avoid religious
places during their periods. The younger generation is speaking out тАФ using
social media, art, activism, and education to normalize menstruation and
challenge outdated taboos.
Take 22-year-old Srishti Bakshi, a menstrual health advocate from Delhi, who uses Instagram reels to educate her peers about menstrual hygiene, PCOS, and period pain. Or Aditi Gupta, co-founder of Menstrupedia, who created a comic book series that explains menstruation in a fun, shame-free way тАФ now used in hundreds of schools across India.
Why Period Positivity Matters
Period positivity isnтАЩt just about
talking freely тАФ itтАЩs about ensuring access, dignity, and equality. According
to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, nearly 23 million girls in India
drop out of school annually due to lack of proper menstrual hygiene facilities.
ThatтАЩs not just a health issue тАФ it's a human rights issue.
тЧП Girls miss school or college
тЧП Women hesitate to seek help for menstrual disorders like endometriosis or PCOS
тЧП Communities fail to prioritize menstrual hygiene infrastructure
On the flip side, normalizing menstruation means:
тЧП More girls stay in school
тЧП Women can advocate for their health without shame
тЧП Men become allies in promoting a healthier, more equal society
Period Products Are Becoming Political
One major win for the movement was
the removal of GST on sanitary products in India in 2018, following massive
public pressure and campaigns like #LahuKaLagaan. Young activists played a key
role in this victory, arguing that menstrual products are a necessity, not a
luxury.
Today, more women are demanding not just pads, but choice and sustainability тАФ from menstrual cups to reusable cloth pads and organic tampons. They're asking the right questions:
Is it safe? Is it eco-friendly? Is
it accessible to all?
Education Is Empowerment
Period positivity begins with
conversation тАФ and that starts with education. From school workshops to YouTube
channels, a generation of educators is ensuring that young girls (and boys)
understand the biology of periods, know how to manage them, and respect them as
natural.

ItтАЩs Not Just a WomanтАЩs Issue
Period positivity also involves
men and boys. In schools and households where boys are included in menstrual
education, stigma breaks faster. Male allies like actor Akshay Kumar, who
starred in Pad Man, or politicians who push for better public toilets and
menstrual leave, play a vital role in changing public perception.
A New Narrative, One Pad at a Time
Today's young women arenтАЩt just
rewriting the menstrual narrative тАФ they're making sure it's read aloud,
discussed in classrooms, tweeted, hashtagged, and made into policy. And in
doing so, theyтАЩre telling the world:
Periods arenтАЩt dirty. Shame is.
LetтАЩs back them up тАФ with education, resources, and respect.
