What is Child Labour?

Child labour refers to work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful to children. It deprives them of their childhood, education, and future, often forcing them into harsh, exploitative environments.

 According to the ILO and UNICEF:

●Over 160 million children are engaged in child labour globally.

●In India, the Census 2011 recorded over 10.1 million child labourers between ages 5–14.

● Many are employed in agriculture, construction, domestic work, and factories under hazardous conditions.

Why It Persists

●Poverty remains the leading cause, forcing families to rely on their children’s earnings.

●Lack of education access, especially in rural India, keeps children vulnerable.

●Weak enforcement of child labour laws allows informal and hidden employment to flourish.

●Gender inequality often results in more girls being pushed into unpaid domestic or care work.

India’s Legal Framework

India has several laws to combat child labour:

●Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986

●Right to Education Act, 2009

●Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015

Despite this, implementation gaps and poor monitoring make law enforcement a challenge.

Global Goals

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 8.7 calls for the elimination of child labour in all forms by 2025. With just months to go, global progress has been too slow—especially in developing countries hit hard by post-pandemic poverty and climate change.
