Hillang Yajik makes history as Arunachal’s first female bodybuilding champion at the South Asian Championships. Discover her journey from rural roots to global glory.
A Historic Moment
At just 24 years old, Hillang
Yajik from Kurung Kumey district, Arunachal Pradesh, made history by
clinching gold in the Women’s Model Physique (up to 155 cm) category at the
15th South Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championships in Thimphu,
Bhutan (June 11–15, 2025). She also took home a silver medal in a separate
division—a double triumph that marks Arunachal’s first-ever international medal
in women’s physique sports.
Yajik’s meteoric rise followed early national—silver at the 13th Federation Cup in Goa (April 2024)—and international qualification for the upcoming Asian and WBPF World Championships.
Journey from Village to Podium
Born in 2000, Yajik holds a master’s in political science and
balances her passion for fitness as a trainer and dance instructor. Her
athletic debut at the 2022 Federation Cup in Sikkim (a fourth-place finish)
laid the groundwork. By late 2022, she had secured silver at the Eastern Zone
Nationals in Kolkata .
Known for her discipline, Yajik’s success led to her selection for major international events—the Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Championship in Indonesia (August 2024) and the WBPF World Championships in the Maldives (November 2024).
National Recognition & Inspiration
Yajik’s double win resonated across Northeast India and
beyond. Arunachal’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy CM Chowna Mein
praised her as a trailblazer for rural women. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju
lauded her historic feat, expressing pride at the national and regional level .
Local bodybuilding associations called her discipline and focus “an inspiration” that elevates the entire Northeastern sporting community.
Breaking Barriers for Women in Sport
Hillang’s win is more than personal—it’s a symbol of
transformation. Coming from a remote tribal district, her journey challenges
stereotypes about gender, geography, and athletic potential.
Her success:
What Comes Next?
Yajik is already preparing for the 56th Asian and WBPF World
Championships, as confirmed by the Arunachal Bodybuilding Association.
With her record-breaking win, she has qualified to compete
among Asia’s finest.
Final Thoughts
Hillang Yajik’s ascent from a village in Arunachal Pradesh to an international bodybuilding champion is a testament to determination, aspiration, and representation. Her story isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about lifting countless dreams and redefining what Indian women can achieve in elite sports.
